  • Big Picture Relationship Tip for August, 2004
    .
Feel more empowered and have more fun -- become effective in all your conversations. Whether you are having a conversation with your partner, your kids, a close friend, someone at the office, or even listening to your inner self, we all know that communication is a powerful tool. We also know what it feels like to be tongue-tied, or unable to find appropriate words for a situation, or nervous about talking because we don't know how another person will react or what the outcome or consequence might be. Yet everyone can become experts in communication I like to simply call it having a good conversation.

Try out these tips and keep refining them as you strive towards better communication:

    1. Become a great listener. This is 75% of all great communication!
    2. "Bookend" difficult things you have to say with your over-all feelings for the person and intentions for a positive outcome for both of you.
    3. The Broken Record Technique: If your main message tends to get lost in conversations that are difficult, rehearse your core message beforehand and stick to it - no matter how the other person tries to detour the conversation!
    4. Learn to have a mind-set of "Win/Win" in every interaction.
    5. "Build on" what another person has said, rather than polarizing - taking or speaking an opposing position or view.
    6. Touch helps ease difficult conversations. Try walking and holding hands, or sit side-by-side, or even back to back. Believe it or not, less eye-contact when you are angry (especially with males) eases a person's ability to listen!
    7. Slow down! Remember you don't have to resolve everything Right Now. Your goal should be to become EFFECTIVE! You know how to push your favorite people's buttons, so you also know how to avoid them! Take your time, cool off, think it through and you'll have wonderful opportunities to be communicate lovingly, kindly, diplomatically with all.

Special Offer for Busy Women at Mom Camp: Sept.15-17
    .
Mom-Camp is a day camp just for women, September 15 - 17 Why? Because women often spend too much time taking care of everyone else in their lives, leaving themselves for last. Mom-Camp offers a much needed self-care adventure to refresh, revitalize, and just have fun. In addition, there are many great speakers and workshops - Dr. Jan is one of them!

Dr. Jan will be a "camp counselor" - that's a workshop leader during tis three-day event. She will be talking with women about how to partner in their relationships, hold their ground and stay "adult", learn different relationships styles, and uncover long held, or deeply buried dreams and desires.

Mom-Camp already has many women registered, but there is still room for more. Big Picture Partnering has a few discounted tickets available -- $100 for the 3-day camp. Discounted tickets will be distributed on a first- come, first served basis. Call Kara Pederson at 612- 338-4233 to request the tickets. For more information on Mom-Camp go to their website.
