Partner-Up To Enjoy The Holidays

It's no secret that the holidays can be the most stressful time of the year for couples. The pressures of family gatherings, blended traditions, traveling and gift-giving can turn the most joyous time of the year into the most unpleasant. Upbeat methods will enable you to enhance your relationship even during the holiday season. Here are a few suggestions:

Communicate Clearly
  • Set aside time early in the season to discuss individual wants and needs including finances, travel, and party plans.
  • Stay in touch with each other through the holidays. When staying with relatives or having visitors at your house, make time for a quick walk together each day or find an activity that allows you to spend some one-on-one quiet time together.
Create Shared Traditions
  • Create rituals specific to yourselves as a couple such as an evening devoted to preparing a meal, sharing recollections of special moments in history and future possibilities-anything that enables you to celebrate your union.
  • Respect past traditions. From white lights on the Christmas tree to a food prepared a certain way, everyone has something special from their family history that makes the holidays a festive time.  Brainstorm some ways to blend traditions and make them your own.

Enjoy a Harmonious Holiday!

Become Empowered to Create
The Relationship You Most Desire

No one is born knowing how to have a relationship. In this day and age, with so many relationship options and little direction about what makes a good partnership, couples often work at cross purposes. They find that their relationship feels good only some of the time and they don't know why it goes sour or feels unfulfilling. Big Picture Partnering: 16 weeks to a rock-solid relationship teaches couples how to become empowered to make skillful choices that will help them create the kind of relationship they desire now and in the future. It's helpful for couples in trouble or couples wishing to take their relationship to the next level.

Here are some conversation questions to do with your partner from Dr. Jan's Living Your Dreams Together: Conversation Cards for Couples.  They can help you create more of what you want in life and from each other. Sit down with a glass of wine, a delicious appetizer, and the deck of 117 Conversation Cards - to have a fun discussion about what you and your partner most like, dislike and care about. Topics cover work, family, fun, friends, money, home, travel, caring and spirit. Here are a sampling of questions to get you started:
  • Which of the following do you like to do? Which would you rather we hire out if we can afford it? Gardening, landscaping, housecleaning, snow shoveling, mowing the lawn, home maintenance and repair, making home improvements, or add your own here.
  • How would you feel about taking a trip with one or both of my parents? With any of my siblings?
Is there anyone in your family I need to be warned about? Who? In what way do I need to be careful around them?
  • Do you feel that each of us is saving enough each month for retirement?
  • If you didn't have to work to earn money, what would you do with your time instead?
  • What's the one small thing I can do on a regular basis - and that I don't do regularly now - that would most make you feel cared for?
